Step 1: Check Microphone Privacy Settings
Windows 11 has privacy controls that can block apps from accessing your microphone.
- Press Win + I to open Settings
- Go to Privacy & Security โ Microphone
- Make sure "Microphone access" is turned On
- Make sure "Let apps access your microphone" is turned On
- Scroll down and check that the specific app you're using has microphone access enabled
- Also enable "Let desktop apps access your microphone" at the bottom

Step 2: Check Your Input Device
Windows might be using the wrong microphone.
- Right-click the ๐ speaker icon in the taskbar
- Select "Sound settings"
- Under Input, check which device is selected
- If you see multiple devices, select the correct microphone
- Speak into your mic โ you should see the volume bar move
- If the bar doesn't move, your mic isn't being detected at this level
Step 3: Check Volume and Mute
- In the same Sound settings page, click on your microphone device
- Make sure the Input volume slider is set to at least 80%
- Check that the mic is not muted
- If you have a physical mute button on your headset, make sure it's off
Step 4: Run the Windows Troubleshooter
- Press Win + I โ System โ Troubleshoot
- Click "Other troubleshooters"
- Find "Recording Audio" and click Run
- Follow the prompts โ Windows will try to detect and fix the issue automatically
Step 5: Update Audio Drivers
Outdated or corrupted drivers are a common cause of mic issues.
- Right-click the Start button โ Device Manager
- Expand "Audio inputs and outputs"
- Right-click your microphone โ "Update driver"
- Select "Search automatically for drivers"
- If that doesn't help, try "Uninstall device", then restart your PC โ Windows will reinstall the driver automatically

Step 6: Check for Windows Updates
- Press Win + I โ Windows Update
- Click "Check for updates"
- Install any available updates and restart
Step 7: Test with Another App
To determine if the issue is system-wide or app-specific:
- Open Voice Recorder (built into Windows) and try recording
- If it works in Voice Recorder but not in your app, the problem is with that app's settings

Nothing Worked?
- Try a different mic โ if another mic works, your original mic may be faulty
- Try a different USB port โ some ports may not provide enough power
- Check BIOS settings โ some laptops have a BIOS option to disable the built-in mic
- System Restore โ if the mic was working before a recent update, roll back to a previous restore point
